Unity and the One Mind in Christ

Posted in Uncategorized by Paul M. Dohse Sr. on December 21, 2016

As the saying goes, “Comedy is funny because it has an element of truth to it” and this clip has plenty of both. But in this episode of “Cheers,” what has caused the disunity and what is the answer?

Biblically, what is the “one mind in Christ”? What does the Bible mean when it states that Christians have the “mind of Christ”? Christianity is a body and Christ is the “head” as in the head of a body, not the head of something from an authority viewpoint.

Part of authentic salvation is a love for The Truth, NOT A Truth (2Thessalonians 2:10). The Bible teaches that in all disunity somebody is wrong. In the wrongness, both people strive to come to a unifying agreement regarding the truth. Romans, chapters 12-15, as well as many other biblical texts, describe how Christians should work through these misunderstandings.

The assumption is that someone is wrong and all have a like desire to be unified in the same mind of truth. In the above video, “Woody” capitulates for the sake of unity at the behest of Frazier Crane’s counsel. In fact, Crane defines manhood in marriage as a willingness to always give the wife her own way for the sake of unity.

See the difference between that and the one mind of Christ? Susan and I have opportunity to do a fair amount of counseling and we know the answer to whether or not we will ultimately be able to help a person or not: do they have a sincere love for THE TRUTH or a desire to cling to A TRUTH for a plethora of different motives?

In this clip, neither Woody or his new wife love the truth. A TRUTH always leads to disunity or a pseudo-unity held together with the duct tape of compromise.

True Christianity is a body with one mind, and the body is unified around agreement in having that one mind. A body is unified according to the collective agreement of THE TRUTH. This, of course, is always a work in progress, but with a common goal.

Truth is then lived out according to the collective consciences of the group, not some authority apart from the one head…Christ.
