– Being grieved
διαπονεω (dee-ah-poh-neh-oh) – To toil through
“exasperated”

D. Authority over demons – Luke 9:1, Mark 6:7

II. Reaction of the girl’s masters

A. “Drew them” into the marketplace
ελκυω – (hel-koo-oh) – to drag. To pull out by taking hold of.

B. A public place

C. What customs?

III. A night in the Philippian jail

A. Continuous praying and “hymning”

B. Prisoners continuously listened to them

C. Reason for the jailer’s fear
– Compare with Acts 12
– Immediate concerns for his life.
– Not considering eternal consequences.

D. An opportunity for the gospel.

Tonight’s Text – Acts 15:7-35Brief review

  1. Peter speaks at the council
  2. Reminds them about Cornelius

-Faith cometh by hearing

-God bore witness of their faith

-Sign of the Holy Spirit authenticated their       conversion

 

  1. “put no difference”

      διακρινω (dee-ah-kree-noh)

– Compare with Acts 10:20

to judge thoroughly – prejudice

 

– Peter accuses them of prejudice towards the       Gentiles

– same lesson he had to learn in Acts 10

 

– Prejudice by imposing presumptuous                   standard

– Prejudice in hypocrisy/orthodoxy

 

  1. Why tempt ye God?

      πειραζω (peer-ad-zoh)

to test, particularly with the idea of piercing

 

  1. Paul and Barnabas give report

– Compare with Peter’s report in Acts 11

  2. Acknowledges consistency with scriptures

                χειρ (keer) – “hand”

                τεινω (tee-no) – “to stretch.”

 

Casting a vote in an election

– No apostolic authority

– Laity selects their elder

 

  1. Reporting to the Assembly in Antioch

Opening the door of faith to the Gentiles

– Most important aspect

– Not expected to happen.

 

III. Contention with Circumcision

  1. Men who came “down” from Judea

– From Jerusalem

– “They of the circumcision”

– Authority to teach this doctrine?

 

  1. Pharisee sect teaching similar doctrine

– Law fulfilled by circumcision

– Under law vs. under grace
