Irony of ironies is JP’s response to them. He makes a living looking for crazies off youtube for the express purpose of polemics. But question them and it is the same sort of critiques of those they criticise. “Where is the love”? “Where is the fruit”? “You are prideful”!
As someone from Aus I could tell you GG dominates the Evangelical landscape in Aus. He is a bit of a dark horse, because many wouldn’t realise how far he has impacted everything, because people haven’t read him to the same extent as say Sproul, Piper, JI Packer and co. But his influence in seminaries and student ministry is so profound. And with regard to MH you are spot on picking up on him. I know you have written about their links to show their connection. It all makes sense to me now. I used to listen to “the White Horse Inn” podcast online (interesting name, but yeah I digress). I was drawn to his style, mannerisms, and theology back then. But I can honestly say back then, even though I largely bought into it (and saw it as “grace saturated and hence liberating), I was always a bit uneasy by some things he said. “If I look inside myself, I see nothing good whatsoever.” I used to think but then, “but what about the work of the Holy Spirit?”. But with regard to GG again, you are ahead of many others who go after Calvinism. Someone like Kevin Thompson does great videos going deep into the systemic problems of Calvinism. But he is hellbent on attacking the older school “5 point types.” And one thing I know you have argued (and I have read you say) is: it is not about election. So yes divine determinism is problematic theologically and philosophically and all but GG’s “Gospel Centred Christianity” is far more influencial and problematic than old school determinism. I know the old schooler Calvinists and the so called New Calvinists both have their roots to Calvin, and further back to Augustine, hence platononism but your work is the only one that addresses the “Gospel Centered” Crew to the extent you do.
