The leader of our Friday youth bible study a long time ago (!) didn’t used to like any hint of ‘worm’ theology. He used to say ‘you are now the King’s kids, you have been adopted into the royal family’, and don’t keep dwelling on what you used to be, and don’t keep measuring yourself by the Law.

This didn’t mean we have all attained instant sinless perfection, we are saints not yet made perfect (Spirit versus flesh battle), but how you see yourself makes a tremendous difference. If you take the view you are still a sinner and total depravity continues after conversion you are defeated before you start. I have to be honest I have never heard anyone in the UK maintain total depravity does continue after conversion, and if they did I would assume ‘conversion’ has virtually no meaning.

I don’t think the expression ‘we are sinners saved by grace’ is necessarily that objectionable provided the meaning is we all start as sinners and our present changed condition (saved) is not through our merit but by God’s grace.
