I tend to agree that using the word Cult keeps people from seeing group think, thought reform, collectivism and other issues that suck them in. They typically leave one group for another they think is opposite whether it’s church, politics, etc. . And miss the fact they are entering right back into groups think.

Lydia, you’re beginning to scare me. Do you know me? (Laughs). I had a friend who left one (opposite cults) for another, just as you are saying. The second one being the MICE “church.” She still believes (indoctrinated, of course; all the tricks and biases in the Protestant’s Guidebook are being used on her) that she is now in the right place. The most difficult thing in the universe (besides trying to understand Chinese-Mandarin) is to realize one is in a cult/being controlled. So, yes, using the word “cult” (in my case, anyway) simply strengthened her blindness to her situation.

Frustration with MICE “churches” is one of my weak points. Sometimes, I wish I could simply walk in there and drag her out of that thing. But the ties that bind are simply too strong/delusional at this stage. Patience. Prayer. Perseverance. I need those. And a slice of cake, always.
