Oh Dear God! That would be funny except that it is true. Where do I begin to enumerate the beliefs and doctrines and practices that have gone awry in the Protestant worldview. Someone had the audacity to tell me that a particular church is on fire with the Holy Spirit because of the serious money pouring in and because of the numbers of people they are drawing and the number of church plants they have established..
I could say that same exact thing about the NFL or auto racing or a popular movie or entertainer. Hey, offer me an array of gaming opportunities and first class rock band (and oh, maybe we will throw in a talk by a popular celebrity comedian life coach motivational speaker/ aka pastor with a handful of scripture verses as window dressing) and maybe I would show up too. With whom is the church competing? The world?
What impresses me is Peter and James to the man begging for alms at the city gate: Silver and gold we have none. But such as we have, we give to you. Rise up and walk. I no longer wonder who the people are in Matthew 7 who say to the Lord, “Lord, Lord, did we not ….. ” And Jesus says, “Depart from me you workers of lawlessness ….” Unfortunately, thinking for oneself is a sorely lacking trait in modern-day America.
