There’s one word that he keeps using over and over again in that interview: “traditions”. Hmmm…seems like there was another group that was know for the exact same thing.

Mat 15:3 “But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?”
Mat 15:6 “…Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.”
Mar 7:9 “And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.”
Col 2:8 “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.”

Quote from the interview: “Traditions are living things. They develop and change over time.”

Psa 119:160 “Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”
1Pe 1:25 “But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.”

I’d rather put my trust in something that never changes, thank you!

Theologians are able to retain authority, regardless of what they say or write, because they can kick you out of the institutional church. It isn’t God-given authority, but, rather church-based power. They disagree with each other so often, to the point a sane person has to wonder what voice they really hear.

Jonathan Edwards denied that there was a material world? He thought God re-creates the world out of nothing at every moment that it exists? His view of reality was so far off, why did people not question everything else he wrote?

Edwards? Is there a source for that?

You would have to ask Kevin Emmert. It’s posted in that article.

These guys are blinded by their own traditions, books, and learning institutions.

I left the Catholic Church as a teenager because I didn’t believe man needed a mediator between himself and God. Who knew that 40 years later all of Protestantism would now believe the same as Catholics 😦

Andy, I live at ground zero and can tell you that all I hear in xtian circle is tradition, church history, creeds, confessions and what is considered orthodoxy. People are buying it. People long for tradition in our changing world. It breaks my heart because it is working. We must point out scriptures to them and also be emphatic it is a relationship with a living Savior. Not tradition.

David and Carmen, As always you guys bring so much to the table! Edwards has always given me the creeps. I read Marsden’s book. The part that freaked me out were the grizzly suicides of those discipled by Edwards. One guy cut his throat with his shaving razor. Was he convinced he was really evil?

The problem with “traditions” is that they are a creation born out of an institution which is a man-made creation and therby become the de facto authority. This places “tradition” (however many levels and hierarchies you want) between man and and scripture, making traditions a mediator. And how many times have we heard Paul say, “There is no mediator! There is no mediator!”?

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” ~ 1 Timothy 2:5
