Paul's Passing Thoughts

Why John Piper and Calvinists are ISIS

Posted in Uncategorized by Paul M. Dohse Sr. on August 9, 2014

In the following video, John Piper states that all people die from God’s hands because he is sovereign, and in doing so, he does no one wrong, we all deserve death. RC Sproul reflects the same kind of idea in the following statement:

My late friend James Boice and I frequently flew to various conference and events.  I am a white-knuckle flyer whereas he loved the bumps and the feeling of exhilaration that comes from flying through the air.  While I looked anxiously out the window, he said, “What is the matter. R.C.?  Don’t you believe in the sovereignty of God?”   I replied, “Jim, that is my problem.  I do believe in the sovereignty of God, and I know that he would be perfectly just to crash me into the ocean right now.  That is why I am so nervous.”

Hence, the atrocities committed by ISIS in Iraq, like the one pictured below, are done by God and are not wrong. Furthermore, how indignant should we be towards these terrorists when they are merely the vessels God is using to bring about His will? Do you see now why abuse in the Reformed churches are not dealt with? Do you see why the victims are blamed? They are merely getting what we all deserve by the hands of those doing God’s bidding.

Why are we giving these people our money? And do you think this kind of Christianity does not pave the way for full blown terror in any given geography?

You would be egregiously wrong if you think not.

Islam and Calvinism are both deterministic.
And we see the results of both all around us.

      Lydia,

As one who has read much in the Calvin institutes, actually, I have read nearly all of it collectively in my studies, and now reading the Quran, the similarities are stunning. Determinism is an absolute dominate theme in the Quran.

Calvin and Mohammed were actually pretty similar, and their theologies produce similar effects
    * God’s Omnipotence (i.e. POWER) trumps all else (and how can you imitate God in Righteousness except by grabbing/holdingwielding POWER?)
    * Resolve paradox of Evil by putting God above Good & Evil — GOD WILLS EVIL, AND WHO ARE WE TO CALL IT EVIL?
    * God becomes Omnipotent but NOT Benevolent
    * Sovereignty becomes Predestination becomes Utter Determinism and Fatalism — “In’shal’lah…. Eh, Kismet?”
    * Extremely detailed theology micromanages EVERYTHING, every possible question answered (“IT IS WRITTEN!”)
    * And both have fanboys More Calvinist than Calvin/More Islamic than Mohammed.

    Hello,

I just want to try to add some perspective on what Piper was saying. You are saying that Piper is saying that people deserve death, and all death is under God’s sovereignty. I fully agree. You and me deserving death is justice. Justice means that disobedience to God deserves punishment. If someone does something evil, he deserves some sort of punishment. The bible says we are ALL sinners and disobey, so we have earned punishment. If we were in a court, we have been sentenced death and are therefore deserving of death. In other words, God (the judge) is very just, so he has every right to give us the sentence we have earned at any time he wants. This means that we deserve punishment as a death 24/7. The world is evil and we are evil.

We deserve death, but God loves us:
I do not know what ISIS believes, but what I can tell you about Christianity is that God knows we deserve punishment, but he instead sent his own son Jesus Christ to pay for the all of the punishment that we earned. Romans 5:8 says “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Any second that a pardoned man lives after committing murder is not something he is entitled to, but is an undeserved gift. In the same way, any second that we sinners live on earth is not something we are entitled to, but it is grace that God shows us. God is wrathful, but he is not hateful. Wrath is a just response to sin. God is just and also very loving. If God hated us, he would not have sent his one and only son to suffer humiliation, pain, and to take on himself the wrath that the history of man deserves. Biblical christianity is not about punishing unbelievers but it is about spreading the gospel – the message that God sent Jesus to die for our sins despite us being so messed up, so that we can believe and be in heaven with him. For me, that means loving people despite what they do to me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw7Rz0At9vU – This website gives a concise concept of our sin and the gospel.

    God is sovereign over death:
This does not mean that God commands all deaths to occur. This means that he is in control and no death is an accident. God has a sovereign plan and uses both Christians, non-Christians, good acts, evil acts, and everything in between. As you read the bible, you begin to realize that the people that God used were messed up in a lot of ways, and God used the “good” and “bad” actions to spread the message in ways that were way beyond the understanding of man. I do not believe that God sadistically killed the 21 christians that were recently beheaded. I think that pained God to see. That is a result of sin and evil in this world. However, I believe God in his sovereignty used these deaths to show people how valuable he was to these Christians so that others might pursue God and also know his love.

I do not want to argue with you guys for the sake of being right. I just believe that God created us – you and me – to be close to him, love him, and be loved by him. I just want you guys to know that God does not hate you or delight in your death. God loves the beheaded Christians and also loves the ISIS members who murdered them. No matter what you have done, God loves you and sent Jesus to die for your evilness.

      Nelson,

No Nelson, as Christians, we DO NOT deserve death. Those who are righteous do not deserve death.

I don’t know if it is a misunderstanding of semantics but I think it is biblical that we are deserving of death. That is the gospel. Let me try to clarify: We earn and deserve death, but Jesus through his death and resurrection gives us his righteousness so that when God sees us he sees Jesus’s righteousness. As Christians, we are still sinners deserving death but are given the righteousness of Christ. That is grace. Christians by themselves are not innately righteous before God, but we are seen as righteous by God because Jesus paid for our sins and gave us his righteousness.

Again if it’s like a court room, we have been sentenced to death… But Jesus took on himself our sentence and also gave us his clean record. Once we believe in Christ, we leave that court with a clean record. Even though we deserved wrath, we are given a clean record by Christ.

No Nelson; unfortunately, like all of the Reformed, you believe a false gospel. THOSE WHO DESERVE DEATH WILL GET DEATH. And no, Christ’s righteousness based on perfect law-keeping is not imputed to us as a substitution for our own new creature righteousness. We are holy as our Father is holy. We are not saved by atonement, that was temporary, we are saved by the new birth.
