Study of the Book of Acts

Tonight’s Text – Acts 4:1-12

Brief review

Scene from Solomon’s Porch – vs. 1-4

Temple Security is called

“Being grieved” – διαπονεω – “dee-ap-oh-neh-oh” “through-pain”.

–          Legitimate concerns – false teaching?

–          Resurrection doctrine

–          “Unqualified” – no authority

Peter and John arrested

A threat to the status quo

Had to be silenced

People believed anyway

Ancillary results – Hearing leads to believing!

God’s program for growth

Scene from the council chambers – vs. 5-12

Rulers vs. Elders – vs. 5

“Elder” –  πρεσβυτερος – “pres-byoo-ter-oss”

πρεσβυς – “press-booss” – an elderly or aged person.

– an elderly (older, mature) person,
– generally respected by the people,

– revered for their wisdom, experience and knowledge.

– ruling authority is not explicit

A room full of powerful individuals – vs. 6

The importance of a name – vs. 7

“By what authority do you do this?”
– Healing?

– Or teaching?

An unexpected answer – vs. 8

–          Don’t get sidetracked

–          Names are irrelevant

–          Only ONE name matters!

Recurring theme:

–          Jesus is the Messiah

–          Jews murdered their Messiah

–          The resurrection.

The builders and the building.

Ephesians 2:20-22

Andy, thank you so much for this wonderful Bible study. The thing that stuck out most for me was the eerie likeness between the philosopher kings in Acts Chapter 4 and what we see in modern day Christianity. I love the depth in your studies and thank you for your hard work in researching and compiling everything. Like the connection between Theophilus, the Saducees, the resurrection and Luke writing all of this to Theophilus to really make a statement, because as you mentioned in the study, these are all people that Theophilus would hold in high regard and would take notice of what Luke was writing to him about. And when you get down to it, it really all comes down to “preaching leads to hearing leads to believing”, sometimes we make things too complicated haha. And the lasting impression of Peter telling the religious leaders about the power of the name of Jesus Christ to heal and forgive. There is no man who has the power to do this despite what some would have you believe, mere man has no power to do these things. Thank you Paul, Susan and Andy, looking forward to next week’s study of Acts. God bless!

    Nicholas,

I’m glad you were able to listen to the study last night. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our Heavenly Father, Lord, and Savior in this venue. I am praise God that it is a blessing to you. Yes, you are correct, the similarities are eerie. The things we see happening today in modern “churchianity” are nothing new. This kind of attitude has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years. God’s pattern for evangelism >is hearing –> believing. Most people, however, have been conditioned to believe that the preaching has to happen within the walls of an institution. That is a convienient way for us to be lazy and ease our conscience if all we have to do is bring the unsaved to “church” to hear the gospel. But that was never God’s intention. Our commission and our mandate is clear. WE are the ambassadors. WE are the preachers. WE are the ones who have the words of life. WE are the ones who are to go out and give that message to the lost. The message is simple: “Be ye reconciled to God!”

    See you next week, Brother!
