Paul's Passing Thoughts

Strange Life Form Named Johnathan Pritchett Found in SBC

Posted in Uncategorized by Paul M. Dohse Sr. on February 10, 2013

johnathan_pritchett-150x150Some guy (we think) named Johnathan Pritchett posted an article on SBC Today that suggests that words in the Bible mean what they say. Obviously, for such an article to be posted on SBC Today also implicates the involvement of otherworldly forces. Whoever this guy is (if he is of this world), he also had the audacity to question the Reformed idea that do’s and don’ts in the Bible are really a heavenly word game to demonstrate the futility of attempted obedience. For sure, such courage in the SBC must be otherworldly. I mean, we haven’t even heard of him, and he is of the youth pool as well. This is truly bizarre. Since the elder statesmen of the SBC are cowardly and mindless, where did someone this young get such brainpower? Hmmmmm. Creepy.

His t-shirt could offer a clue. I think this a cryptic sign that he is indeed from another planet. Nevertheless, if he would agree to in vitro fertilization—the SBC could be saved!

You can read the article here and judge for yourself: http://sbctoday.com/2013/02/07/the-statement-christianity-is-not-about-a-bunch-of-dos-and-donts-is-a-bit-ridiculous/

So young, yet the wisdom of Moses who said God’s word is not too difficult for us to obey (Due. 30:11-14) for life and good as opposed to death and evil (Due. 30:15).

This is probably the key statement of the whole article:

“One day, it ought to be possible to talk about “do’s” and “don’t’s” without having to preface the whole conversation with the total sum of Protestant theology. We don’t live in that day. So yes, no one is saved or justified by doing any “good works” or following “rules and regulations;” but, salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is not the total content of Christianity.”

That’s such a fantastic point. By now we should not have to feel the need to qualify our stand on justification. To paraphrase the writer of Hebrews 6:1….Enough about the Gospel already, move on to maturity!!!

      Andy,

Yep, and guys like this are smart enough to know it’s progressive justification.

The article is on SBC Today. I don’t know if it is on SBC Voices also. But if you read the comments you will see that Johnathan isn’t a Calvinist.

Right, I would assume that’s the case.

    Christian,
It is SBC Today–thanks for the correction. I assumed he wasn’t a Calvinist–hope the post doesn’t reflect otherwise.

Christian, I think he was a Calvinist. If I remember correctly, his pastor at one time was Steve Lawson.

      Lydia,
Who is he? Christians need to get groups of families together and grab young men like that and start their own denominations. Its time that Mohler et al get real jobs.

Pay no attention to the whippersnapper. This young man slipped through the cracks. We apologize for any inconvenience. He will be assimilated.

Paul, Though I do agree with the premise of Pritchetts post that we are to “do and don’t” in our Christian walk (sanctification); I do not agree with his quote here and it smells to me of justification fused in with sanctification again….. I do not have time to get into a deep discussion of this so I will make my points short.

“I think if one has an unhealthy obedience problem that never improves over time, they should examine themselves to see if they are in the faith.” Jonathan Pritchett

What is the obedience problem? How much is enough?

Yes, I do think that one who does not mature, but stays a BABY in Christ will always struggle with feeling and having a sense they may not be a Christian. But the ASSURANCE stands based on many verses in Scripture.
One just has to look at Corinthians and still Paul calls them brethren after all the sin they were committing. I think though that they suffered much, as did many of the churches (due to the seven churches of Revelation), by Christ removing their lampstand (their influence and witness) to the rest of the world. Also, I believe that when we do not “do” we will not receive rewards in heaven (for not persevering) and God could also take us from this world (early death, etc…)

I have seen where solid Christians became more IMMATURE when they got older. I knew one who was a family member, but I still counted him as one of the elect. So basing our salvation on maturity is a dangerous road to travel I think and Pritchetts comment here reflects again the issue that I saw far to often in the fundamental independent Baptist churches I use to attend when I was young. This premise can still be used to abuse the flock into a “fruit keeping” philosophy and hang the dangling carrot of “Are you doing enough?”

At the church I have been attending the elder there had a great sermon on this issue of being a hearer and doer of the Word. It is worth a listen. Just click on messages and you will find this sermon.

    Mr. Mohler,
Quite frankly I do not find your comment amusing, neither have I found your behavior fitting for your position. The dumb sheep sitting in the pews are beginning to wake up as to the elitist leadership in the SBC.

No need to panic. The true Al Mohler would hold the policy of the majority of philosopher kings, that policy being, not to address us at all. Since, you know, he’s up there. And we’re not.
