Paul's Passing Thoughts

Can Anybody Say Nothing Better Than Francis Chan?

Posted in Uncategorized by Paul M. Dohse Sr. on November 10, 2011

….and we are just a lump of clay and can’t really know anything significant about God anyway….and his new book on Hell just lays out the facts so you can decide for yourself; it would be wrong for him to teach you anything about hell that is definitive.

You know Paul, I usually do not agree with you. On this one however, we are in full agreement. I usually like Francis Chan but….on this one…..wow.

And I agree, too. Although I do have a soft spot for Francis Chan because he walked away from the mega church spotlight of fame and influence to puposeful obscurity because it was ‘killing his soul’. And he heard his name mentioned more than Jesus Christ. As one who has been behind many a mega stage…I can attest to that system being a soul killer. I was pretty impressed he walked away.

      Lydia,
I hate to be brutally honest, but am afraid I’m more of a pessimist than you are. I have seen too many New Calvinists who have Chan’s soft, spiritual-like demeanor, but are capable of unspeakable abuse when people question them. A good example of that is Dan Turner, a staff elder at Clearcreek Chapel in Springboro, Ohio. Those who meet him for the first time are immediately taken in by his soft demeanor, but just ask a few folks who are in other states hiding from him what he is capable of if you question Clearcreek’s doctrine. He also has some pretty brutal bedside manor regarding the terminally ill because he can’t comprehend why they aren’t overjoyed at the prospect of being on their way to see Jesus. He reminds me of Chan to a “T” in the way he relates to people publicly, and they both hold to the same doctrine. So again, sorry for the pessimism.

Wow! Living proof that if you hang out in New Calvinism too long, you will lose your spiritual mind! Like Lydia, I was initially impressed that Chan chose to step away from fame and fortune as a rising NC star, but he needs to stay in obscurity awhile longer until he really hears from God. He is on track to be lumped with the likes of Rob Bell at this pace. Beware of humble arrogance.
