I don’t know what these folks you are upset with really mean by what they say, but I know what I would mean if I said it. I won’t take the time to comment on everything you have written, but I would like to comment on what you wrote re: 2 Peter 1:3-17. My question is, what do you think the gospel is about? I understand that you are a SB and that you may have been taught the “fire insurance from hell” concept of the gospel, but that is not the gospel. It is through the gospel and the gospel alone that we have been given all things that pertain to life and godliness; it is through the gospel that he has called us to glory and virtue; it is though the gospel that we have been granted great and precious promises; it is through the gospel we have become partakers of the divine nature; it is though the gospel we have escaped the corruption that is in the world. It is because of the blessings we have received through the gospel that Peter exhorts us to give all diligence to add . . . .His words are, “and for this very reason, giving all diligence . . . .” In other words, as a result of the blessings you have received through the saving work of Christ, be diligent to add the virtues God intends to build into your life through his Spirit’s ministry.
Luke 11:27-27, as wonderful as it is for other purposes, does not teach the woman not to worship the person of Christ. Granted, we worship him through the Word and not though the sentimentalism like the red ribbon/white ribbon thing. The verse teaches her not to give undue adoration to Mary–“Blessed is the mother who gave birth to you and nursed you.” Christ never discourages our adoration and worship of him.
Randy, are you kidding me? It’s obviously thanksgiving for the womb Christ came from because of His greatness–not Mary’s. It’s a blessing on Mary because of Christ’s greatness. Jesus then makes it clear that the greatest blessings come from obedience–not adoration. BTW, how do we worship Christ’s “personhood”? That’s a nebulous concept that is never commanded in Scripture and replaces an objective observation of Scripture. I can tell you I do not have Gerry’s patience.
