I like Donn Arms’ traditional point in the review, the hammer hits the nail on the head:

“Christ referred to the Holy Spirit as our “helper” in John 14:16. Who is he helping? And what is He helping us do? The verse begins with a coordinating conjunction that connects it to the idea presented in the preceding verse, which says: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to help us obey Christ. Let’s teach counselees to do just that.”

I’ve been thinking about this myself to counter my GS/Sonship reading. We hear “APART FROM US” and “OUTSIDE OF US” so much from the opposition. It’s true, Christ is on the thrown in heaven and we’re on earth. However, on the spiritual side, Christ didn’t leave us as orphans. He sends the Spirit of Truth, His Spirit, “the Spirit of Jesus.” The Spirit doesn’t speak on His own. He glorifies Christ by taking from Christ and making it known to us. Jesus says in prayer (John 17:3; 26) “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you (the Father), the only true God, and Jesus Christ , whom you have sent.” and “I have made you (the Father) known to them and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

If we know God, and God’s love is in us, and He is in us, with us, and for us, is it not a powerful efficacious process for life change?

Bill, ya, the John reference, we all could have had a V8! Du! Hey, in view of all the Christo-centrality going around, doesn’t 1Cor. 15:28 say that once all of His enemies are defeated that He is going to give all things back to the Father so that God will be “all in all”? I’m I missing something here?

Paul, sure, all in all. It’s an incredible mystery. We are now being transformed into His likeness. Now, we see like a poor reflection, now I know in part. Then we shall know fully, even as we are fully known (1Cor 13:12-13). God will be “all in all.”
Do I hear a HALLELUIAH! Ha! Sound’s like God wants a real tight knit family close to himself. That works for me.

It takes faith to believe God’s plan. I get impatient and doubtful at times. But all things are possible with God. Maybe that’s the New Calvinist problem. Like Abraham & Sarah’s promise of a child in ripe old age. It didn’t seem to fit with reality. They tried other options to help God, but it didn’t work. However, they did persevere until Isaac (means “he laughs,” I can see why) came along. So, maybe the New Calvinists just got impatient with God and decided to create a theological concoction to fit their own world view?
