An Open Letter to John MacArthur Jr. Concerning Progressive Justification
Mailed 4/13/2013 by certified letter:
Mr. MacArthur,
I am writing to you openly concerning the fact that you now preach Calvin’s false gospel of progressive justification. As an avid follower of your teachings over the years, and one greatly helped by them in the past, I now implore you to repent of preaching another gospel. I am provoked to write this letter after listening to your general session address at this year’s Shepherds’ Conference.
Sadly, for the most part, the message was a shameless pandering to the Calvinist audience with the same worn-out Neo-Calvinist protocol; e.g., us against evangelicalism, redefinition of the plain sense of Scripture to undermine the interpretive abilities of the laity, etc., etc. Per the usual in these settings, you also insinuated that this movement has a “fresh” take on evangelism and understanding the Scriptures in a “deeper” way.
On the one hand, you expounded on the importance of evangelism and the idea that it is the church’s primary purpose for being here, and then on the other hand propagated the idea via John 3:3 that God is going to do what He is going to do regardless of anything we do. And you also proffered the idea that it is wrong to call unbelievers to do anything in our gospel presentation other than believe, and that was only forthcoming at the very end and stated once.
Primarily presented was the idea that we proclaim the new birth and inform individuals that there is nothing they can do to obtain it. They are simply to “ask” and hope God had decided to save them before creation. In your third party presentation of the question, what can we tell them to do? you are clear: ask only and hope for the best. Shockingly, you also suggested that Reformed elders can “ask” for others as mediators (your personal experience shared about the young man suffering with aids).
Other than the fact that you have harshly criticized Rick Warren for not including repentance in his gospel messages and your hypocrisy is therefore staggering, this idea contradicts a mass of other biblical texts. One of many would be Paul’s description of his ministry that implored people to be reconciled to God. In other instances Paul simply called for repentance. The Calvinist you proudly proclaimed yourself to be in the same message has transformed your prior teachings into confusing messages that raise more questions than are answered.
But these are all symptoms of the basic problem: your false gospel. In one article written by you, the following was stated:
“If sanctification is included in justification, then justification is a process, not an event. That makes justification progressive, not complete” (emphasis added).
But yet the fourteenth chapter of Calvin’s Institutes is entitled: “The Beginning of Justification. In What Sense Progressive?” So, what’s our first clue? Indicative of your Calvinist theology that a child could even dismiss is the simple fact that Paul categorized the lost and the saved in Romans as “under the law” versus “under grace.” Calvin taught that Christians are still under the law. This is plain from his writings in ICR 3.14.9-11 in which he states that Christians cannot please God in sanctification because their works are judged by the law as a continued standard for justification. Calvin makes it clear that no “believer” has ever earned merit with God because their works are judged by the law (first sentence of 3.14.11). In 3.14.10, he even cites James 2:10, a verse that concerns those under the law, to make his case.
As I think you would know, Paul makes it clear in Romans that being under the law is synonymous with being enslaved to sin, unable to keep the law, and destined to a future judgment by law. Under grace is synonymous with having a mind enslaved to the law and free to do righteous acts, and declared righteous apart from the law. But in fact, Calvin’s total depravity also applies to the saints and deems them still enslaved to sin. You often cite Calvin’s concept of total depravity, but when are you going to start being honest and also mention you believe, as Calvin, that it applies to Christians as well?
Calvin stated in no uncertain terms in 3.14.11 that Christ’s “reconciliation with God” is “perpetual” and “not promulgated” in the beginning only. This is because the same forgiveness that saved us needs to be continually applied to our lives according to Calvin:
“For since perfection is altogether unattainable by us [which is not the point because we are under grace and not law], so long as we are clothed with flesh, and the Law denounces death and judgment against all who have not yielded a perfect righteousness, there will always be ground to accuse and convict us unless the mercy of God interpose, and ever and anon absolve us by the constant remission of sins” (3.14.10).
Hence, there is not one complete “washing,” but according to Calvin, a perpetual washing is needed (see JN 13 and 1COR 6:11).
This doctrine always dies a social death and needs to be resurrected again after carnage from the previous “Resurgence” is forgotten. The present movement was resurrected by Robert Brinsmead in 1970. Coming forth from its sectarian womb, it has divided countless families and churches. The seminary you are president of pumps out hundreds of sectarian Calvinists on a yearly basis. One of your graduates split a church two blocks from where we live.
This is your shameful legacy unless you repent.

John MacArthur and Al Mohler: Their Hearts are Revealed by Their Endorsement of CJ Mahaney
“MacArthur’s hypocrisy is sickening. While calling Osteen demon possessed for propagating positive visualization, he himself propagates gospel contemplationism via Mahaney’s Reformed assertion that gospel manifestations occur as a result of contemplating the five-word gospel: ‘Christ died for our sins’ and looking for it in every verse of the Bible. MacArthur has bought into this Reformed mysticism lock, stock, and barrel.”
John MacArthur looks good and sounds good. I was never that impressed with Al Mohler, but was a rabid follower of John MacArthur for years. My present and merited complete disrespect for MacArthur was a long, slow, and painful process.
Sorting out truth can often be a laborious affair, and Bible authors promised us that false teachers are able to present themselves as angels of light. In other words, they will not be wearing cheap costumes. So, Jesus gave us a really easy way to know who the false teachers are: “By their fruits you will know them.”
Regardless of what the Bible plainly states in regard to the qualifications of elders, John MacArthur, while spending time fustigating Joel Osteen, has consistently endorsed CJ Mahaney by appearing with him at several conferences and inviting him to conferences directly hosted by the church he pastors.
I have news for MacArthur, the sins of CJ Mahaney have never once been named in Osteen’s camp and I seriously doubt they ever will be. MacArthur’s hypocrisy is sickening. While calling Osteen demon possessed for propagating positive visualization, he himself propagates gospel contemplationism via Mahaney’s Reformed assertion that gospel manifestations occur as a result of contemplating the five-word gospel: “Christ died for our sins” and looking for it in every verse of the Bible. MacArthur has bought into this Reformed mysticism lock, stock, and barrel.
I thank Julie Anne Smith and her investigative reporting at Spiritual Sounding board .com. Please go there and get up to speed on what is being revealed about the ministry that CJ Mahaney is president of, Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM). This is what MacArthur endorses. “But he didn’t know.”
Boloney, if a housewife from Oregon knew, MacArthur knew. And now we know that truth and justice really doesn’t matter to Mac. These guys make their own rules; like when Calvin had Michael Servetus executed when heresy wasn’t on the books as a capital offence.
This is their proud heritage, and the student always ends up like the teacher.

John MacArthur: The Bad, Good, and Ugly
The Bad
Without a doubt, one of the greatest disappointments in my life is John MacArthur’s departure to the dark side of progressive justification leading to a doublespeak and ambiguity that never characterized his teaching in the past. In an article entitled, “Justification by Faith,” he first states that “if sanctification is included in justification….that makes justification progressive….” Then he goes on to state in the same article that the two can never be “separated.” MacArthur now functions in the Reformed world that creates its own reality; we can never separate things that shouldn’t be included. I find this nonsense coming from a man that has been granted awesome opportunity in sharing the gospel intolerable.
Furthermore, associations with hardcore Reformed mystics and the granting of credibility thereof further disturbs. He recently published a pricy theological book with hardcore Reformed mystic Joel Beeke entitled, Justification by Faith Alone: Affirming the Doctrine by Which the Church and the Individual Stands or Falls. This book boldly proclaims that the individual and even the church stands or falls on the gospel of progressive justification. It’s outrageous and despicable.
The Good
But yet, before a recent sermon, MacArthur made a statement in regard to the recent Newtown massacre. He noted that Christians should have answers in the midst of such events. This is a tremendous breath of fresh air as opposed to the usual whiffle dust that Christians offer in such situations. His statement offered powerful points in regard to a Christian worldview on this matter, and offered hope for the victims. He also noted the substantive outreach to the victims in that area by former GCC associates. It was truly a sweet visitation to the MacArthur that I used to know. Yes, a few perspectives made me a little queasy, but I think this 5 minute statement is one that every Christian should ponder, and it can be listened to here: http://www.gty.org/Blog/B1212172#.UNE5ab1IMlY.twitter
The Ugly
Yet, the fact remains that this ministry continues to deal with its share of the havoc being wreaked on the church daily by the false gospel of progressive justification. It is unclear whether MacArthur thinks the doctrine is a valuable supplement, or whether he has totally bought into the whole package. Furthermore, his counseling ministry headed by Dr. John Street offers blanket credibility to NANC and CCEF. Street is the president of NANC. Both of these ministries together constitute 90% of our present-day active biblical counseling. But yet, the counseling of both is grounded in the gospel of progressive justification. This is counseling that denies the idea that people can really change. It is a ghastly misrepresentation of criminal proportions in the name of Christ.
No doubt, remnants of what he formally taught are still present. He has written books that I would still recommend: “Saved Without a Doubt,” and “How to Meet the Enemy.”
BUT, I would only recommend these writings specifically, and would add extreme caution when reading or listening to anything Mac. Time is valuable. A pity that teachers who can be listened to without launching an investigation on every sentence they utter are becoming fewer and fewer. But it is what it is, and predicted by the apostles.

SGM and the American Organized Church: The Totally Depraved and “Sinners Saved by Grace” Playing the Part
I guess the news is spreading fast; three women have filed a lawsuit against Sovereign Grace Ministries. Apparently, in between Jesus manifestations that take place when Christians contemplate the gospel, some molestation of children took place among the member churches and was covered up by SGM leaders. Culprits who “repent” and victims who “forgive” find favor with the philosopher kings, while pesky, self-righteous “Pharisees” who think righteous indignation is possible among the totally depraved are often brought up on church discipline for being “divisive” and not understanding the “grace and mercy of the gospel.”
Even the philosopher kings who have gospel contemplationism down pat and exhibit consistent Jesus manifestations defile themselves by lending credibility to ministries that perpetuate serial abuse, child rape, and tyranny. For example, the president of SGM, who is strongly endorsed by John MacArthur Jr., recently underwent an image makeover by Southern Baptist superstars Mark Dever and Al Mohler.
These men should have this kind of spin down pat because Southern Baptists are only rivaled by the Catholic Church in regard to child rape and the cover-up thereof. A good place to get up to speed on this is here: http://stopbaptistpredators.org . Barf bag not included. And by the way, I am a Southern Baptist.
Neither do Regular Baptists propose to be left out as exhibited by the ABWE Bangladesh missionary kids scandal. And Independent Fundamental Baptists can boast of the Jack Hyles cartel that they covered for. Hyles and his followers raped, pillaged, and stole for more than thirty years unabated.
This isn’t rocket science. As covered thoroughly at the 2012 TANC Conference, this is the result of sixty years of hyper-grace, hyper-gospel theology. Listen to CJ Mahaney in the following clip, and then think about the biblical concept of, “….as a man thinks, so is he.” And keep in mind; he’s talking about Christians to a Christian audience:
Christians have been told for sixty years on a continual basis that they are “sinners” and “totally depraved” while being taught little more on a yearly basis than 365 versions of CJ Mahaney’s five-word gospel: “Christ died for our sins.”
I don’t know what the saints otherwise expect, but I can tell you this: they are fed-up. Though I am not at liberty to discuss it, more of these lawsuits are coming down the pike, and rightfully so. These are ministries and pastor kings that have been continually confronted and refuse to repent. Hence, they may now be treated “like publicans and tax collectors.” That equals a green light for taking them to court. Christians are no longer biblically obligated to treat these ministries as Christian. Many victims have invested untold hours, and dollars in an attempt to right wrongs (while other pastors ignore their cries for help) and should be granted restitution.
I will also tell you that I am totally done with the organized church, and I have a feeling that I am not alone. We now worship God here in our home every Sunday, and I think this is what’s coming more and more in the future: a return to home churches as it was in the first century.

Some Proverbs for Dr. John MacArthur Jr.
I would affirm my love and appreciation for C. J. Mahaney, Wayne Grudem, John Piper, and other conservatives in the continuationist camp. I consider these men to be friends and allies for the sake of the gospel. Charismatic Chaos was primarily written against the excesses of the broader Pentecostal and Charismatic movements. And those excesses are not what these men are best known for.
~ John MacArthur
Proverbs 28:4
Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the law strive against them.
Proverbs 28:7
The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father.
