Louisiana Mandate and Separation of Church and State

Conservatives and Christians:

If you are celebrating Louisiana mandating the Ten Commandments being shown in the classroom, you are falling for the trap.

If the State can mandate a religion, then the same religion can also use the power of the State to enforce its orthodoxy.

This is Tyranny!

This is exactly what we had during the Dark Ages. Christianity has NEVER in history shown itself to be guardians of liberty of the individual.

    Hi Andy,

    I didn’t know about Louisiana’s mandate about the Ten Commandments but I’m not sure Madison would have considered that an “ecclesiastical establishment.” Since the Ten Commandments being shown in classrooms is different from having a state church I’m not sure Madison would have a complaint with this. Such things were common in the 18th and 19th centuries in the United States. For example, here is part of Article 3 from the Northwest Ordnance (passed in 1787):

    Religion, morality and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged.

    Even if Madison would be opposed to this mandate, it’s clear that many of the founders wouldn’t have a problem with it.

    In case you’re wondering, I don’t think this is going to make a lick of difference one way or the other in the schools.

    The nearest I ever came to abandoning the faith – something I have always considered impossible – was reading an online book detailing how Calvinists behaved when they achieved power in Scotland in the 1600’s. More control freaks than the old East German Communist Party. This was coupled with some appreciation of Calvin’s pontificate in Geneva.

    These are those who boast that they have the truth, have a real understanding of the meaning of scripture. And yet they behaved like that! Exponents of the Doctrines of Grace who showed no mercy.

    The candle flickered briefly as I asked myself is this stuff actually true if its ‘best’ exponents could behave like that? That they were children of their age has only limited value as a defence. (The doctrine of Limited Value, the L of TULIP!!)

    Well, let God be true though every man a liar and the name of God is blasphemed amongst the Gentiles because of you, but the dark side of church history can pose a real challenge, especially if you have in you time become weary with churchianity.

      The Puritans at Massachusetts Bay Colony is another horrific example in history of what happens when you have a church-state. There’s a reason the Founding Fathers of America set up this nation the way they did.

      Therein is the problem; it is assumed church is a valid representation of authentic Christianity. It isn’t.
