I look back on my days at Theo College a decade and half ago. I recall a unit of Systematic Theology, uncredited but required by students before the “real units”. The question was put out “what is the difference between Christians and non-Christians?” One lady responded “Christians know they are bad”, to which the lecturer said, “that’s exactly right”. I soaked up that view on reality. When it stated like that now, how obviously wrong it is occurrs to me. But I realise people steeped in it, when you say don’t you hear the problem with that mentality, they would reply “what’s the problem you see? If you think there is a problem you don’t understand the depths of *your sin* and God’s holiness.” This is also why I still to this day struggle to overcome by schizophrenic view of reality. Praying prayers “I know I can’t rely on myself, but I know this behaviour isn’t good, but I know I can’t do go in my strength” – but I always did feel but what about the role of the Holy Spirit?
It’s the rejection of the literal new birth by Protestantism. Our goal is to be more like the Father, not realize how far apart we are from him. That necessarily means we must remain under the law, which actually empowers sin in our lives and robs us of assurance. We are God’s literal children as a state of being. How wrong Protestantism is…is stunning. 6 months in 30 plus years ago I knew something was wrong with church, I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Pray for me; I have 6 more months of RN school, and I need to get out and get busy with proclaiming the true gospel and an alternative to church, which is a return to home fellowship.
