I received an email today that reminded me of something that needs to be addressed; this whole idea that the church is the moral compass of society. Viz, so goes the church—so goes the culture

Not only does history fail to bear this out, it’s not a biblical idea.

Let’s begin with some good-old-fashioned common sense. It never fails; pastors point to society’s decadence and blame it on a departure from that society’s faith, and of course, commitment to the church which is supposedly God’s representation on earth.

There is only one problem with that: the church has had 1800 years (“church” was never around until circa 330 AD) to make its case, and when it is all said and done, all we ever hear is the decrying of a great falling away. Regardless of the time and massive resources invested to make the case, society is still going to hell in a handbasket because of a weak church. Supposedly. This makes heavily funded colossal failures like LBJ’s Great Society look like a minor mishap.

Secondly, and supposedly, if society does not get with the church program, God will judge our nation. Susan and I recently talked to a man who shared why he is not going to vote in November: “It’s a waste of time because our nation is under God’s judgement anyway.” I have even heard this recently from the likes of Pastor John MacArthur Jr.

Say, would somebody please tell when and how God announced that? Did He hold a press conference that I missed? America is under God’s judgement because the church big dogs say so? Really?

Thirdly, this is clearly fearmongering for the purpose of manipulation and control.

Fourthly, in all of history, especially medieval times, the darkest days have always been during the times in history when the church ruled over government. In fact, the uber virtuous Protestant Reformation spawned more wars, disease, and death than any other single event in human history. In contrast, Pax Romana ushered in 200 years of unprecedented peace and prosperity….before the church came about sometime in the 4^th century.

Fifthly, Christ NEVER issued a mandate to transform any given society. This idea, that He did, is predicated on the false notion that God’s kingdom is presently on earth and its administration is through the church. Not.

No, Dominion theology is unbiblical.

God’s people are to function as a family, because that’s what we are, and make disciples—not transform any given society.

I have some errands to run today and was a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to post anything today. Before I left, I figured I would check my Facebook page, and discovered something very strange that I would not normally see on my newsfeed. That’s because I didn’t realize that my lovely Susan hadn’t logged out of her account.

I couldn’t resist but to comment on the said post, and thought, “Hey! this can be my post for the day as well.”
