Susan’s Recovery Going Well: Thank You for Your Prayers
We are thanking our Lord for how well Susan’s surgery transpired and prayers that went up during that time. In any surgery where general anesthesia is necessary, significant risks are involved. This became evident when we signed the permission form that outlined the risks of general anesthesia which include death, brain damage, and a host of other unpleasantries.
Susan is progressing well in her recovery after major knee surgery; this kind of surgery is like what NFL players undergo because of sports injuries. My Susan fell down some stairs while she was helping me with a task.
As Biblicists, we don’t hide behind Gnostic doctrines that enable us to detach ourselves from the pain of life; we embrace the reality of life and all of its emotions. Even though the surgery was minor as compared to many others, it evoked thoughts, perhaps sinful, of what life would be like without Susan. As you know, I am a big advocate of dwelling on what we know to be true and not what ifs. Yet, life’s uncertainty can take us to very unpleasant contemplation. We also forget that God is not watching over us any less when we go to the store than in difficult situations, the price of food notwithstanding.
Nevertheless, I am a man deeply in love. We can wish that it was us under the knife rather than a loved one, but in love, fear of the worst case or the reality thereof is barely the better place to be.
When we pray for these situations, we cannot know all of the facets touched, but those prayed for feel both the storm’s full force and the peace wrought by God’s answer.

I’m glad the surgery is a done deal–for you both! I’ve had 2 total knee replacements so I can relate! Just tell Susan to do everything those nice physical therapists say, assuming she will have some therapy. She’ll be back to usual activities in no time! 🙂

Dear Friends,
There were times on Friday that I had no idea that I was in surgery as well. Ha! Finding a vein to use for the IV took three experts, one ultra-sound machine, and 45 minutes. The surgery itself took only an hour! I realize that the kind of surgery I had was of the outpatient/minor type, but I had weeks of anxiety—not of the surgery itself, but of going under the anesthesia. After hobbling around since December 30, and the pain getting worse, I finally resolved myself to the need of medical attention. Now the pain is one of recovery and eventually of being pain-free. Whoopee!
Thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers. It will be good to be at home with the men in my life, using the recovery time to prepare my conference talks, and helping Philip get caught up in his schoolwork. Paul is precious, but I don’t plan on taking him grocery shopping again in the near future—that event is a post.
Much love, Susan

Susan,
I don’t always agree with you and Paul. At times I know I can come across hard and relentless. But please know how much I love you both. Your ministry is an invaluable part of my own belief system. I am so glad the surgery went well and that you are okay.
