Why New Calvinists Annoy Me
PPT nor TCANC are platforms to discuss the truth with New Calvinists. They have had their chance. I discussed my thesis with them for four years and their arguments were found wanting (when they weren’t personal attacks, which were rare). But this comment by a self-proclaimed Newbie is indicative of why they annoy me so much:
“Paul, I am what you would call a new Calvinist. I happen to be 52 years old. Your critique above simply isn’t true on several points. For example, you wrote that we “believe justification and sanctification are the same thing.” That’s not even close to being a true statement.”
“….not even close”? Um, excuse me, but isn’t their slogan, “The same gospel that saved us also sanctifies us,” and: “We must preach the gospel to ourselves every day”?
So annoying. First, per the usual, note his profound two-point argument:
- That’s all wrong.
- Not even close to being right.
Second, I’m “not even close,” but yet, note the word “SAME” in their own mantra continually espoused day and night.
It’s just annoying.

What’s wrong with the “old Calvinism”?? You know, the Calvinism of say… JOHN CALVIN?? If they want to “make up” a “new thesis” — leave JOHN CALVIN OUT OF IT. If John Calvin DID NOT PREACH IT — it’s NOT CALVINISM. What I find annoying is the SLANDER in the use of the name of Calvin — then changing what he wrote and calling it “New Calvinism”. Perhaps it is neo-paganism — but it’s not “new Calvinism”. There can be no such thing. That’s what I find annoying. If I wrote my life’s work, and someone twisted my works and wanted to co-opt my name — I’d want to come out of the grave to defend my name and my doctrine against them to stand against them co-opting my good name in things I would never agree with. So, where is the respect for JOHN CALVIN in leaving CALVINISM as it WAS WHEN HE WROTE HIS OWN WORKS?? I mean, if they want to come up with a new thesis — name it after the author thereof. Don’t try to co-opt John Calvin. And, it would seem to me, that faithful friends will prevent it by standing up against it.
To be honest, I agree with John Calvin in his 5 points in time. I don’t believe that what he wrote addresses things I see and believe in eternity regarding election and reprobation before time. Yet, I respect the man enough not to co-opt his name and call what I believe “New Calvinism”. No, John Calvin never taught it — and it’s disrespectful to co-opt his name to a new thesis.
Use your own names neo-pagans, and stop using the name of John Calvin without his permission. (That annoys me. lol)
