Paul's Passing Thoughts

TGC Part 18: Michael Horton Drama, “The Wordless Gospel”

Posted in Uncategorized by Paul M. Dohse Sr. on April 7, 2011

In this clip, Horton explains his belief that the law and gospel are separate.  Only problem is, the law isn’t just the Ten Commandments, it’s all of Scripture (Psalms 1:1-6 Matthew 4:4 among hundreds that could be cited). Therefore, the law informs us as to what the gospel is, so how can you separate them? Horton, in this clip, explains that the law can give us guidelines for purposes of which we will always fail to accomplish, but the gospel is a “promise” from God that will always be accomplished because it is of God.  So the law doesn’t contain any promises? That’s just crazy, and obviously untrue.  In usual GS doublespeak, Horton says we need “purposes” (ie., the law), but they can’t “drive” us. In other words, we need purposes, but they don’t do us any good. Huh?

    Paul,

Horton sounds wrong, but surely, it’s over my head. I come away from this thing same as you…. Huh??? I’ll give comment a shot.

Once again, I know it’s GS/Sonship Movement because Horton is selling the “WE FAIL” in any law/will of God.

Now, here’s an observation. Jesus refers to the first person and Head of the Trinity as “Father” and “My God.” A point about Jesus is that God the Father is His source of existence, highest authority, and He obeys because He also loves His Father. The Father gives Jesus the law/will.

“For I do not speak on my own accord, but the Father who sent me COMMANDED ME what to say and how to say it (JN 12:49).”

In other words, the Father is the law giver for Jesus. Through law the will a of personality is revealed. Jesus’ love of the Father moved him. Can we not say Jesus is also driven by the law/will of the Father?

John 4:34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work.”

We also love the Father, so are we not driven by His law/will? “I love they law!”

Hmmm,John 4:34: you mean food for Jesus was not merely gazing on the Father’s glory? Exactly.
