Have you guys heard David Pawson’s ‘De-Greecing the Church’? It’s interesting. Immel is more thorough! It’s just unusual to hear this from a bible teacher.

Yes I have! Pawson is very good at getting evangelicals to think out of the box, and preaches against some well-established evangelical shibboleths. He is very good on predestination, and also on things that have gone seriously wrong within UK evangelicalism, such as sinful remarriage after divorce and a general unwillingness even to consider that post-conversion sinning might put salvation in jeopardy. You may not agree with the latter, but it deserves more serious consideration than merely quoting Rom 8 : 1 in response.

Overall themes and context are the keys, and word studies of various kinds along with history. The Hebrew Sages where off the hook and all over the metaphysical map. They were totally wacko. Going back to the so-called Hebrew roots? You might as well hunt Easter eggs while on 2 or 3 hits of some good windowpane.

In my last Calvinist church (it posed as a normal Baptist job), the pastor fell off his bed one morning and unto his head. That fall caused an idea. He called me into his office because he thought I was buying his bubblegum. He then told me, “John, I want the women to wear hats in the services from now on.”

“No, I said, “go and have that bump checked out. You are turning into a Jew, and you are not one.”
