Determinism is a lazy and cowardly approach to life. It is a god of the lazy person’s own making. Determinism finds its articulation in the Protestant Reformation and its historical-redemptive hermeneutic. It supplies an easy one-size-fits-all explanation for life events and brashly characterizes God without fear. It eats and drinks from life with no emotional investment and deems life as having no value other than God’s glory. Every detail and life event is predetermined by God for His own purposes, glory, and self-love. It is a worldview that hates life under the nomenclature of pious worship.

A tip: just put real events in their quotes. “In the infinite wisdom of the Lord of all the earth for his own purposes ordained that child to die a gruesome and painful death from cancer”
That is what I do back to them when they put these sorts of quotes everywhere. Makes them nuts.

You all may think that harsh but this reality came home to me about 8 years ago. A Neo Cal couple at our church who were affiliated with SBTS and on the mission field had a young daughter die in a freak accident. It was totally random and freak. No one saw it happen. They were in a foreign country which meant they had to bury this child right away. They came home after this.
I reached out to the wife who confided to me she could no longer believe in that God. But her husband made a living by that God so it was a very sticky situation. He was given a teaching job at a seminary and she became a recluse in grief to stay away from that world. So she became agnostic because her paradigm was of this “sovereign God who directs and orders all things.
That was a huge lesson to me. She could not turn to the Great Comforter because He ordained this to happen for His Glory. She had nowhere to go. Not even to her husband who viewed it as ordained.

Death is the last “ENEMY” that God will defeat. Death is God’s enemy according to the Bible. Determinism is the godless philosophy of the ages. Freewill is a speck on the historical radar screen.

Here is my big beef with it: our youth should be encouraged to find cures, improve life, etc,etc instead of being immersed in the reformed culture of death that their God willed for people.

Lydia, love your tip. And why not? The harshness of life is right where my mind goes first, every single time I hear or read about everything that happens being the so-called “wisdom” or “providence” of God. I wish people who go on like that would take a good look at the world around them, and think about what their words really mean, about both God and people, and about the messages they send to every person, including brutalized innocents and those who torment them.
I feel so very bad for the wife you mention who had no one and could not turn to the Great Comforter. Just one important example of why I really wish more people understood, or cared to try to understand, why this kind of thing has the potential to wreck a person at the very core of their being. You want to call something harsh? Look no further than the Warfield quote!

It’s the same old same old; accusing God of being the author of evil. Same EXACT Gnostic stuff that the apostles had to deal with. We mourn with those who mourn until Christ puts all enemies under His feet. We rejoice in the present goodness that can be found in the land, and await our redemption. That’s hope. We find our course and strive to complete it, and in that we can look death right in the eye and say, “I am ready to be offered up.” In our day, Protestantism has made it about the institution’s course, not the believer’s course. It is sadness of gargantuan proportions.
